Regional Church Adopts Guideline on Sexualized Violence - Saxon Lutheran Church Sets €15,000 Payouts for Survivors of Sexual Violence

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony has introduced new guidelines for addressing cases of sexualised violence. These rules follow the framework set by the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) and aim to provide clearer support for survivors. The decision was backed by a strong majority in the synod and took effect immediately after approval.

Under the new policy, survivors of sexualised violence will receive a standard payment of €15,000 for offences against sexual self-determination, even if legal time limits have passed. Additional compensation may also be awarded based on the severity of the crime and the lasting impact on the victim's life.

Since 2020, an independent commission within the Saxon regional church has already approved €698,000 in payments to 58 survivors. However, no confirmed cases of sexualised violence in Saxony since 1946 have been officially verified by the commission, as available records lack specific details or reasons for certain rejections.

The church's records show 141 documented survivors and 84 accused individuals since 1946. Regional bishop Tobias Bilz emphasised that the recognition process does not rely solely on legal standards. Instead, the church will take responsibility if survivors can credibly demonstrate their suffering.

With Saxony's adoption, 19 of Germany's 20 regional Protestant churches now follow the EKD's guidelines. Only the churches in Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia and Anhalt/Central Germany have yet to implement them.

The guidelines create a consistent approach for acknowledging and compensating survivors of sexualised violence. Payments will be made regardless of legal time constraints, with further support available for severe or long-term harm. The move aligns Saxony with most other regional churches in Germany.
