Kretschmer's Inaugural Visit to Prague - Saxony and Czech Republic strengthen ties with high-speed rail and economic talks
Michael Kretschmer, Saxony's Minister-President, has made his first official trip to Prague to meet the Czech Republic's newly formed government. The visit includes planned talks with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, focusing on key areas of cooperation between the two regions.
During the visit, Kretschmer will sign the guestbook of the Czech Republic as part of the formalities. His discussions with Babiš will centre on strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in economic, energy, and transport sectors. Joint cross-border projects will also be a priority, with both leaders aiming to deepen collaboration.
One major infrastructure project has already been agreed upon between Saxony and the Czech Republic. On March 2, 2020, officials from both states, along with Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Správa železnic, signed a letter of intent to develop a high-speed rail line connecting Dresden and Prague. The two cities, just 150 kilometres apart, highlight the close geographical and economic links between the regions. Beyond transport, broader European policy challenges will feature in the talks. Topics include strategies to boost the continent's economy and refine its funding policies. Kretschmer has previously expressed enthusiasm for advancing initiatives that will benefit both Saxony and the Czech Republic.
The visit marks a step toward closer cooperation between Saxony and the Czech Republic. With concrete projects like the Dresden-Prague rail link already underway, both sides aim to build on economic and transport partnerships. The outcome of these discussions could shape future cross-border collaboration.
