Heuer: "Minority government should not be a taboo" - Saxony-Anhalt Braces for Election Shake-up as AfD Leads Polls
Saxony-Anhalt is preparing for its state election on September 6, 2026, with the current minority government of the CDU and SPD in power since December 2024. Recent polls indicate a challenging landscape for the center, with the far-right AfD leading, and the FDP and Greens struggling to clear the five-percent threshold.
CDU parliamentary group leader Guido Heuer has ruled out any coalition with the far left or the far right, leaving the party with limited options. A black-red alliance, consisting of the CDU and SPD, would not be sufficient to counter the AfD, the Left Party, and the BSW, potentially leaving the coalition without a majority in parliament.
Heuer has not dismissed the possibility of a minority government following the election. He prefers another term for the black-red-yellow coalition but acknowledges a minority government as a viable option. The party's Spitzenkandidat Sven Schulze is set to lead the charge in the upcoming election.
With the far-right AfD leading in the polls and the FDP and Greens failing to secure enough votes, Saxony-Anhalt's political landscape is set for a shake-up. The CDU, under Heuer's leadership, is preparing for all scenarios, including the possibility of a minority government, as the state heads towards the election in September 2026.
