Bodycams at the Police - How it Works and What's Planned - Saxony-Anhalt Police Expand Bodycam Use After Trial Success in 2024
Police in Saxony-Anhalt are expanding their use of bodycams after a successful trial period. The devices, tested since December 2024, have already provided crucial evidence for criminal cases. Now, the state plans to equip all officers with them by 2027.
The trial in northern Saxony-Anhalt began in late 2024, with officers wearing bodycams during patrols. Most recordings captured incidents where suspects resisted or assaulted police. In Stendal alone, 52 clips have been used as evidence in criminal investigations.
Officers report the cameras are easy to use, with long battery life and simple controls. The Interior Ministry in Magdeburg will buy 650 more devices in 2026, pushing toward full deployment by 2027. The visible cameras also appear to calm tense situations, improving transparency.
Meanwhile, the state parliament is discussing new rules to link bodycams with Tasers. If approved, drawing a Taser would automatically turn on the camera. A separate debate in Niedersachsen, led by Interior Minister Daniela Behrens, may also allow bodycam use inside private homes. No final decision on either proposal has been made yet.
The expansion follows positive feedback from officers and evidence of the cameras’ usefulness. By 2027, every police unit in Saxony-Anhalt will have access to the technology. The recordings will continue to support prosecutions while increasing accountability in policing.
