Friends of the Staatskapelle Halle Back Warnings Against AfD

Saxony-Anhalt's cultural leaders unite against AfD's nationalist cultural crackdown

The board of the Friends of the Staatskapelle Halle has explicitly endorsed warnings from 27 cultural institutions in Saxony-Anhalt about the risks of a nationalist-driven cultural policy, as well as a supporting statement from the state's Network of Cultural Associations.

The declaration states in particular:

"Implementing the AfD's announced cultural policies would strike at the core of cultural institutions—and also undermine the work of volunteers in Saxony-Anhalt's Network of Cultural Associations. The network advocates for the freedom of art and culture, for the diversity of artistic and cultural expression, and for preserving and advancing the state's rich cultural landscape. It sees this as its indispensable contribution to an active civil society and a lived democracy. The AfD's cultural policy goals—marked by nationalist and regressive thinking, demands for identity-promoting programs, open hostility toward creative freedom, and threats to silence unwelcome institutions—stand in direct opposition to these values."

"Within our scope and alongside the Staatskapelle, we will resist any attempt to restrict culture and the arts," declared board chairman Axel Thielmann.
