Saxony-Anhalt's internet revolution slashes slow-speed zones and boosts fibre access

Saxony-Anhalt has made major strides in improving its digital infrastructure. New figures show a sharp rise in high-speed internet access across the region. Infrastructure Minister Dr. Lydia Hüskens presented the updates in Magdeburg on Tuesday. The share of households with 1 Gbps connections has more than doubled in recent years. In 2023, only 25.96% of homes had such speeds, but that figure has now jumped to 65.37%. Similarly, fibre-to-the-building or fibre-to-the-home (FTTB/H) coverage has surged from 13.07% to 48.74%.

The region has also cut down on slow internet areas. 'White spots'—places with speeds below 30 Mbps—have fallen from nearly 9% to under 3%. Now, 97.53% of households, or around 1.1 million homes, can access at least 30 Mbps. Meanwhile, 93.08% of homes have speeds of 100 Mbps or faster. This progress comes from a mix of public and private investment. Over 30 telecommunications firms have helped expand the network, while Saxony-Anhalt has put in €500 million from EU, federal, and state funds since 2008. The combined effort has played a key role in closing the digital gap.

The improvements mean faster and more reliable internet for most residents. With fibre connections spreading and slow-speed areas shrinking, Saxony-Anhalt’s digital network now ranks among the most advanced in the country. The region continues to push for full coverage in the coming years.
