Number of daycare centers in Saxony has decreased - Saxony's Childcare Sector Booms Despite Facility Drop and Birth Rate Decline
Saxony's childcare landscape has seen significant changes. Half of all children under three are now cared for in kindercare settings, despite a decline in facilities and a drop in birth rates.
The number of kindercare facilities in Saxony decreased by 43 last year, reaching 2,069 as of March 1, 2023. However, the number of available childcare spots increased by 742, totaling 378,159 places. This growth in spots may be attributed to the expansion or consolidation of existing facilities.
The birth rate in Saxony has been declining since 2017. Last year, Saxony recorded the fewest births since 1995, with 24,697 live births, marking a 2% decrease from the previous year. This trend mirrors the nationwide decline in births.
Despite the decrease in kindercare facilities and birth rates, Saxony's childcare sector has managed to increase the number of available spots. With 96.5% of three- to six-year-olds attending kindercare, the sector remains an essential service for families. However, the number of employees in kindercare centers also decreased by 2.2%, highlighting the need for continued support and investment in the sector.
