Green Party Lament Shortage of School Psychologists - Saxony’s mental health crisis leaves young people without urgent support

The Green Party in Saxony has called for urgent action to address the escalating mental health crisis among young people. According to the party, severe staff shortages and a lack of resources are leaving students without the support they need.

Current staffing levels in Saxony make effective prevention and crisis intervention impossible, the Greens warn. With only 90 school psychologists employed statewide, each is responsible for around 5,000 students—far above the recommended ratio of one to 1,000. Consequently, young people in need of mental health support often face waiting times of several months.

The Greens argue that without swift intervention, young people in Saxony will continue to grapple with long waits for mental health care. Their proposed strategy aims to establish clear standards, increase staffing, and ensure better access to support services across the state.
