Schill House reopens as a memorial to Nazi-era victims in Braunschweig

The Schill House in Braunschweig has reopened after its fifth major renovation. The historic building, once adjacent to a subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp, now serves as a place of remembrance. City officials and preservation groups worked together to restore the site for future generations.

Between 1944 and 1945, a subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp operated next to the Schill House. Around 800 people were forced into labour there under brutal conditions. The building has since become a key site for remembering the victims of National Socialism in Braunschweig.

The renovated Schill House will continue its role as a memorial and educational space. The restoration ensures the building remains accessible for visitors learning about Braunschweig’s history. The project reflects ongoing efforts to preserve the memory of those affected by the Nazi era.
