Schlangenbader Straße Tunnel's Future: From Traffic to Wastewater Plant
The future of the Schlangenbader Straße tunnel is under review, with proposals ranging from keeping it open for traffic to closing it for redevelopment. The 'AufKläranlage' design, among others, suggests transforming the tunnel into a wastewater treatment plant and creating a biodiversity-rich biotope on the A104 roadway.
The Schinkel Competition 2023, organized by the Architects' and Engineers' Association of Berlin-Brandenburg, received over 100 entries. From these, 13 designs were awarded, including the winning 'Berlin's Urban Bio-Loop' which focuses on sustainable use of the area, incorporating issues like demographic change and the circular economy.
The 'AufKläranlage' design proposes converting existing autobahn tunnels and parking levels into a wastewater treatment plant, while also creating a biotope for filtering and returning gray water to local water management. The winning design, 'Berlin's Urban Bio-Loop', focuses on integrating green spaces, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, and creating multifunctional urban spaces that reconnect divided neighborhoods.
All awarded works of the competition will be exhibited at the University of the Arts in Berlin from March 13 to 26, 2023. The future of the Schlangenbader Straße tunnel remains uncertain, with proposals ranging from keeping it open to transforming it into an innovative wastewater treatment plant.
