City Council Demands Urgent Aid for Municipalities in the North - Schleswig-Holstein cities demand urgent financial relief to avoid collapse

Local leaders in Schleswig-Holstein have raised urgent concerns over the financial strain on cities. The Städtebund and Städtetag are pushing for immediate relief and reforms to prevent further pressure on municipal budgets. They warn that without action, cities may struggle to function effectively.

The chair of the Schleswig-Holstein Municipal Association (Städtebund) has demanded protection for northern cities from new financial burdens. Any future decisions, the group insists, must come with full and flexible financial compensation. They have also called for the Konnexitätsprinzip—the rule that 'whoever mandates must pay'—to apply to any new or expanded tasks imposed by federal or state authorities.

Anna-Katharina Schättiger, chair of the *Städtetag* and mayor of Neumünster, has urged immediate relief for local governments. The *Städtetag* has warned that cities losing their ability to act could threaten democracy and social cohesion. Meanwhile, Ulf Kämpfer, Kiel's lord mayor and deputy chair of the *Städtetag*, has emphasised the need for fast reforms. His focus is on modernising, simplifying, and improving the efficiency of government operations.

The warnings come as cities in Schleswig-Holstein face growing financial challenges. Without swift support, the Städtetag fears municipalities will lose their capacity to function. The Städtebund has made clear that any new obligations must be fully funded to avoid further strain.
