Scholars stage walkout over Chancellor Merz’s controversial migrant remarks

Around 30 scholars from the Germany Integration Foundation staged a walkout during Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s speech on Wednesday evening. The protest took place after remarks by the chancellor that many deemed derogatory towards migrants. The group, wearing 'We Are the Face of the City' stickers, left collectively as a sign of defiance.

The scholars, most of whom rely on grants from the foundation for studies in journalism, culture, and academia, exited while Merz addressed award winners. He had earlier called them role models for the country, but his previous comments—including a dismissive reference to 'the face of the city' and a derogatory remark about Belém as COP30 host—sparked outrage.

The walkout has intensified criticism of Merz’s rhetoric, with some calling his behaviour uncultured. Meanwhile, the scholars’ protest has been framed as a democratic act, reinforcing their status as role models for others. The incident highlights ongoing tensions over migration and representation in public discourse.
