Schomacker Enhances Yacht Insurance With Pet Coverage and Lower Deductibles

Hamburg-based yacht insurer Schomacker has upgraded its policies for the upcoming boating season. The changes include broader trip cancellation coverage and improved skipper liability protection. Customers will now benefit from new options without facing higher premiums. One key update allows pet-related issues, such as illness or injury to dogs and horses, to qualify as valid cancellation reasons. This addition comes at an extra cost of one percent of the insured loss amount. Policyholders can also now include a partner or another essential person in their trip cancellation coverage.

The skipper liability policy has been expanded to cover failures or loosening of prosthetics and implants as grounds for cancellation. Meanwhile, the deductible for towing assistance has been cut from €2,500 to €1,300. For charter-related damages that leave a boat unusable for future renters, the deductible has been removed entirely.

Schomacker has also scrapped the €150 deductible for property damage claims under its skipper liability insurance. These adjustments follow the company's 2024 redesign of its Skipper-Haftpflichtversicherung, which has since gained 15% more market share by 2026. The policy stands out by covering cyber risks, drone-related damages, and climate-induced perils like extreme storms—areas often excluded or limited by competitors such as Pantaenius and Allianz. The updates provide boaters with more flexibility and financial protection. Schomacker's policies now address a wider range of risks, from pet emergencies to cyber threats. The changes take effect immediately for the current boating season.
