School for All Initiative to Proceed Despite Signature Shortfall

Despite falling short of the required signatures, the 'School for All' initiative, championing unburdened funding for special education services, will proceed as an individual initiative in the cantonal council, backed by the collected signatures.

The initiative was a response to the 'Special Needs Classes' initiative, proposed by the Green Liberal Party (GLP), Free Democratic Party (FDP), and Swiss People’s Party (SVP). This initiative advocated for separate special needs classes for students with behavioral challenges.

Initially launched by Pro Infirmis, insieme Zurich, Procap Zurich-Schaffhausen, and the Zurich Disability Conference (BKZ), the 'School for All' initiative called for expanded support measures in schools. However, it failed to gather the necessary 6,000 signatures, with only around 3,000 signatures collected. Birgit Tognella, a Social Democratic Party (SP) cantonal councilor, confirmed this shortfall.

Although the 'School for All' initiative did not meet the signature threshold, it will still be considered in the cantonal council as an individual initiative, thanks to the signatures gathered. This move reflects the council's commitment to discussing and addressing important educational issues, even when they don't originate from a popular vote.
