Schwalmtal Food Bank Plans Major Upgrades After Official Visit
A federal lawmaker and a local mayor visited the Schwalmtal Food Bank in Waldniel earlier this year. The trip on January 8 aimed to understand the daily operations of the charity, which relies on around 30 volunteers. Discussions also turned to upcoming upgrades for the facility.
Dr. Martin Plum, a federal lawmaker, and Mayor Andreas Gisbertz toured the food bank during its first distribution of 2023. They observed how food is sourced, sorted, and handed out to those in need. The politicians also spoke with volunteers about their roles and the support they receive from public donations.
During the visit, plans for renovating the food bank were shared. The upgrades will include larger refrigeration and storage areas, as well as a sheltered workspace to protect volunteers from bad weather. Volker Weyers, the food bank’s chair, thanked the officials for their interest in the project.
The renovation work is scheduled to start in the second half of the year. Local council members will collaborate with the food bank to carry out the improvements. No CDU politicians currently in office in January 2023 were noted as part of the renovation discussions.
The visit highlighted the food bank’s reliance on volunteers and community support. Renovation plans are now in motion, with construction expected to begin later in 2023. The upgrades will help the charity store more food and provide better working conditions for its team.
