Simulated Forest Fire: Disaster Protection Teams Practice Real-Life Scenario - Schwerin stages high-stakes wildfire drill in munition-laced forest
Schwerin's emergency services are running a major disaster drill today. The exercise focuses on a simulated wildfire in a munition-contaminated woodland near Schelfwerder. Locals, allotment holders and boathouse owners have been asked to prepare for temporary restrictions during the operation.
The scenario begins with a fire breaking out south of Paulsdamm. Strong winds push the flames towards nearby allotment gardens, creating a high-risk situation. Due to unexploded ordnance in the area, direct firefighting is ruled out as too dangerous.
Over 120 personnel from fire, police and rescue teams are taking part. Fire engines and a police water cannon will be deployed, while drones provide aerial surveillance. Crews will also practise extracting water from Schwerin Lake and transporting it over long distances to tackle the blaze. The region around Schwerin holds around 1,200 known munitions sites and over 500 hectares of contaminated land from World War II. Past incidents, including bomb disposals in Schwerin in 2023 and large-scale operations in Ludwigslust and Parchim, have repeatedly forced evacuations and posed risks to emergency responders.
The drill aims to test coordination and response tactics in a hazardous environment. Residents and visitors are reminded to follow guidance and avoid restricted zones during the exercise. Emergency services have stressed the importance of preparedness in areas still affected by wartime explosives.
