Schwesig continues as chair of the Mediation Committee - Schwesig and Hoppenstedt re-elected to lead Germany’s key mediation body

The Mediation Committee of the Bundestag and Bundesrat has re-elected its co-chairs for another term. Manuela Schwesig (SPD) and Hendrik Hoppenstedt (CDU) will continue leading the body, which resolves disputes between the two chambers. Their reappointment was confirmed at the committee’s first meeting following the new federal government’s inauguration on 17 December 2025.

Schwesig and Hoppenstedt have worked together in these roles for the past four years. The committee’s task is to find compromises when the Bundesrat rejects legislation passed by the Bundestag. Both leaders bring experience from their long-standing cooperation in this position.

The re-election of Schwesig and Hoppenstedt means the Mediation Committee keeps its established leadership. Their ongoing collaboration will shape how conflicts between the Bundestag and Bundesrat are resolved in the coming years. The committee’s work remains crucial for passing laws when the two chambers disagree.
