Sebastian Kurz joins CSU retreat to debate Europe’s future challenges
Former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz was invited to speak at the CSU’s annual retreat in Banz Abbey at the end of December. The event brought together key political and media figures for discussions on pressing issues. Kurz’s address focused on Europe’s role in global competition and the challenges facing politics and the economy today.
The invitation came from Klaus Holetschek, a senior CSU member, who cited regular exchanges with Austrian counterparts and shared policy interests. Alexander Dobrindt, another prominent CSU figure, also extended the offer to Kurz, ensuring his participation.
On the first day of the retreat, Ulf Poschardt, publisher of Welt, Politico, and Business Insider, took part in a fireside chat. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including migration, bureaucracy, and geopolitical shifts—all areas Kurz highlighted in his speech.
Another speaker, Seyran Ateş, delivered a talk titled A Free Society: No Room for Political Islam, Far-Left, or Far-Right Extremism. Her remarks added to the retreat’s focus on ideological challenges and societal cohesion.
Kurz’s appearance at the CSU retreat underscored the party’s interest in European political and economic debates. The event also provided a platform for media and policy leaders to exchange views on extremism, migration, and governance. Discussions from the gathering are likely to influence future CSU positions on these issues.
