Sebastian Niedermaier wins Bamberg's mayoral runoff with 56.7% support
Sebastian Niedermaier has won Bamberg's mayoral runoff election with a clear majority. The 56.7 percent result secures his position as the city's new leader, replacing long-serving mayor Andreas Starke. His opponent, Jonas Glüsenkamp of the Green Party, was defeated in the final vote.
The election took place after Andreas Starke chose not to run again following two decades in office. Niedermaier, a member of the CSU, first joined Bamberg's city council in 2014. Over the next ten years, he took on key roles, including parliamentary group leader for the CSU and deputy chair of the main finance committee. He also served on committees for culture, social affairs, and economic development.
Voter turnout reached 56.0 percent in the runoff. Niedermaier, who runs an organic nursery in Bamberg, campaigned on his experience in local politics and community issues. His victory marks a shift in leadership after Starke's extended tenure. The new mayor officially takes office in April 2024. His background in both agriculture and municipal governance shaped his campaign platform. The election result confirms his broad support among Bamberg's residents.
Niedermaier's win brings a new direction to Bamberg's city hall. He replaces Starke, who led the city for 20 years. The transition follows a decisive vote, with nearly 57 percent of participants backing the CSU candidate.
