Second Gauchach Valley Bridge on the B31 legally approved
The Freiburg Regional Council has approved plans for the second Gauchach Valley Bridge along the B31. This decision follows years of delays and legal scrutiny. Construction is now expected to begin in 2026, provided no further appeals are filed.
The project was first approved in 1991, with the Döggingen bypass opening in 2002. However, the second bridge over the Gauchach Valley between Unadingen and Döggingen was never built. A recent environmental impact assessment found no major ecological barriers, despite examining effects on beavers, sand lizards, and climate impacts.
An extra review became necessary after the German Environmental Transport Association (VCD) filed a lawsuit. The council’s decision is not yet legally binding, and further challenges could still emerge. If no appeals are lodged, the procurement process—paused since 2022—will restart. Project documents are now available for public review on the Freiburg Regional Council’s website. A formal public notice will be issued in mid-January, delayed slightly by the Christmas holidays.
The ruling allows the project to move forward, with construction likely starting in 2026. The bridge aims to improve transport links in the region. Final approval depends on whether any additional legal objections arise in the coming weeks.
