Secure into the new year

New Year’s Eve celebrations in Germany will face stricter rules this year. Local authorities have banned fireworks near sensitive locations to reduce fire risks and protect heritage sites. The measures follow federal laws aimed at ensuring public safety and preserving cultural landmarks.

Under German law (§ 23 of the First Explosives Ordinance), municipalities must prohibit pyrotechnics near certain buildings. The restrictions cover churches, hospitals, children’s homes, and nursing facilities. Half-timbered houses and cultural heritage sites are also included to prevent fire damage.

Residents have been asked to avoid setting off fireworks near farms, nature reserves, or other vulnerable areas. The ban aims to protect animals and reduce disturbances. Authorities emphasised that violations could lead to penalties. Police and regulatory teams will patrol on New Year’s Eve to enforce the rules. Their presence is meant to maintain order and respond quickly to any incidents. The focus remains on preventing accidents and safeguarding both people and property.

The restrictions apply nationwide, with local councils responsible for enforcement. Fireworks will be allowed only in designated areas away from protected sites. Officials have reminded the public to follow the guidelines for a safe and responsible celebration.
