Semei Holds Historic Direct Mayoral Election
Semei, the administrative center of Abai Region, held its first-ever direct election for city mayor on October 12, 2025. Over 220,000 residents were eligible to vote, marking a significant step in the region's democratic process.
The election, which took place across 128 polling stations from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., saw strong public participation. For the first time, blind voters received election materials printed in Braille, ensuring accessibility for all. The new system of direct elections for city mayors was introduced in 2025, following President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's state-of-the-nation address in September 2024. As of now, no information is available about the elected mayor. Ballot counting began immediately after polls closed, and official results are expected to be announced soon.
The election in Semei signifies a milestone in the region's political landscape. Despite the lack of immediate news, the high voter turnout and accessible conditions indicate a positive response to the new direct election system.
