Semey women lose over 1.3M tenge in brutal real estate scam
Two women in Semey, aged 35 and 33, lost a combined 1,367,000 tenge in a real estate scam. The fraud involved a 49-year-old acquaintance who promised them a 'lucrative deal' on an apartment purchase. Authorities have since arrested the suspect after she admitted to the crime.
The incident began when the suspect, posing as a helpful intermediary, offered to assist the women in buying an apartment. She convinced them to transfer the money, claiming it would secure a favourable property deal.
After receiving the funds, the suspect disappeared without completing the transaction. The victims soon realised they had been defrauded and reported the case to the police. Investigators quickly identified and apprehended the woman. Under questioning, she confessed to her role in the scam. Authorities have classified her actions as fraud under the Criminal Code. No other cases of similar fraud by alleged real estate agents in Semey have been recorded so far in 2024.
Police have urged residents to exercise caution when engaging in property transactions. Verifying documentation and conducting thorough checks on intermediaries can help prevent such scams. The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
