Shashi Tharoor rejects Veer Savarkar Award over unauthorised announcement
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has turned down the Veer Savarkar International Impact Award. The decision follows confusion over the award’s organisers and their announcement process. Tharoor confirmed he had neither been consulted nor agreed to receive the honour before it was made public.
Aji Krishnan, founder-secretary of HRDS India, claimed Tharoor was selected for his global influence and representation of Indian interests. Krishnan praised the MP’s credentials, including his presence at high-profile events like the state dinner for Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also highlighted Tharoor’s talks on British colonialism as a source of inspiration.
The rejection of the Veer Savarkar Award raises questions about the NGO’s procedures. Tharoor’s decision stems from unclear communication and unauthorised announcements. The organisers now face scrutiny over how future recipients will be handled.
