Sheinbaum skips G20 summit again, prioritizing domestic duties over diplomacy
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will not attend the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg. The decision follows her absence from last year’s gathering and marks another instance of her staying within the United States for official duties. She has led the country for just over a year and rarely travels abroad.
Sheinbaum’s last international summit was the G7 meeting in Canada this June. She had hoped to meet U.S. President Donald Trump there, but no such encounter took place. Now, both Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have also pulled out of the G20.
The United States’ government has not yet announced who will represent the country in South Africa. No public details exist about Sheinbaum’s replacement at the summit. Instead of attending, she will focus on domestic commitments.
Her approach contrasts with many other world leaders, as she has skipped major gatherings before. The G20 in 2024 was another summit she did not attend.
The absence of Sheinbaum, Trump, and Putin will change the dynamics of the G20 talks. The United States’ delegation remains unnamed, leaving questions about its participation. Sheinbaum’s decision keeps her focus on national priorities rather than international diplomacy.
