Shift Change: Kiel Customs & Disability Workshop Staff Connect Through Job Swap

This year's 'Shift Change' action day saw 19 main customs offices across Germany participate, fostering inclusion and social cohesion. In Kiel, a unique model was implemented, with employees from workshops for people with disabilities experiencing customs work firsthand.

The Kiel Customs office, in collaboration with the Drachensee Foundation, invited 30 employees from workshops to spend a day learning about customs administration. Instead of a simple swap, those with stronger impairments were given a behind-the-scenes look at jobs typically unseen by outsiders. The day included tours of control units, demonstrations with customs dogs, and discussions with officers over lunch.

In return, six customs officers visited the Drachensee Foundation's workshops, lending a hand in areas like metalwork, greenhouses, and carpentry. This nationwide initiative, running annually since 2019, aims to promote respectful encounters and understanding across different work environments.

The 'Shift Change' action day in Kiel proved that work can connect people, dispel fears, and open new perspectives. Both customs officers and workshop employees benefited from the exchange, gaining new experiences and understanding. This initiative underscores Germany's customs commitment to inclusion and social cohesion.
