Should teachers remain civil servants? A heated debate reignites in Germany

A fresh discussion debate has erupted over whether teachers should keep their civil servant status. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann recently questioned the long-standing policy. In response, dbb chief Volker Geyer has defended the system as vital for stable and high-quality education.

Geyer criticised what he called repeated attacks on the department of education framework. He argued that such a system ensures stability in schools and helps attract skilled educators. Without it, he warned, educational standards could drop.

The dbb’s demands include a 7% pay rise and a minimum €300 increase within a year. Geyer’s defence of civil service status highlights its role in maintaining educational quality. The discussion debate follows Linnemann’s recent challenge to the current system.
