Signature collection for Canada exit to begin in Alberta province
Alberta has given the green light to a referendum on leaving Canada. The decision follows changes to the province’s rules on citizen-led votes. A campaign group, the Alberta Prosperity Project, is now pushing for a public vote on secession.
The latest move comes after an earlier attempt at a secession proposal was blocked. Courts ruled it unconstitutional, forcing Alberta to revise its referendum laws. Under the new rules, organisers must first appoint a financial officer before collecting signatures.
The campaign has until December 31, 2023, to gather around 178,000 signatures from registered Alberta voters. If successful, the petition would trigger a province-wide vote. Residents would then decide whether Alberta should break away from Canada and become an independent state. No group has yet been named as leading the signature drive. However, the Alberta Prosperity Project remains the main advocate for the referendum.
The outcome of the petition could lead to a historic vote on Alberta’s future. A successful referendum would not automatically grant independence but would force further political and legal discussions. The next steps depend on whether organisers meet the signature target by the deadline.
