Simu Liu slams Hollywood’s failure to embrace Asian representation
Actor Simu Liu has spoken out against Hollywood’s ongoing struggles with Asian representation. In a series of blunt social media posts, he criticised the industry for failing to build on recent progress made by films like Shang-Chi and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Liu began by retweeting a thread that listed the few Asian male actors cast in romantic lead roles, including John Cho, Manny Jacinto, and Daniel Dae Kim. He called the lack of opportunities 'fucking appalling' and described fighting against systemic barriers as 'SUCKS'. The actor also argued that Hollywood still views Asian talent as a financial risk, despite the success of films like Minari, The Farewell, and Shang-Chi.
Liu’s comments highlight a persistent gap between Hollywood’s occasional successes and lasting change. While films with Asian leads have proven profitable, the industry continues to treat such projects as exceptions rather than the norm. His criticism adds pressure on studios to move beyond token progress and create sustained opportunities.
