Sixth-graders dive into local politics with Hürth’s mayor
A group of sixth-grade students from Ernst Mach Gymnasium (EMG) in Hürth recently visited city hall for a hands-on lesson in local politics. Mayor Dirk Breuer welcomed the class, offering insights into municipal work and answering their questions on everything from transport to voting rights.
The visit began with a short presentation by Breuer, outlining a city’s key duties and ongoing projects. He then took part in a light-hearted quiz, choosing between options like 'Christmas or Easter' and 'burger or döner', which brought some laughter to the session.
The students, led by their civics teacher Dennis Müller, raised serious topics as well. They asked about extending the Stadtbahn Line 18 to Hürth Park and debated whether the minimum voting age should be lowered. Breuer also explained the basics of financial planning, helping the pupils understand how budgets shape local decisions. Before leaving, each student received a small gift bag as a memento of their visit.
The meeting gave the pupils a direct look at how local government operates. They left with a clearer picture of political processes and the role of a mayor. The visit also provided Breuer with a chance to engage with young residents on issues that matter to them.
