Snail Bridge in Zehlendorf Still Partially Closed After Years of Delays
The 'Snail Bridge' in Zehlendorf, a vital connection for locals, remains partially closed after years of deterioration. Renovations, which began in 2022, have been delayed, leaving the northern section dilapidated and covered in graffiti. Despite recent progress, the bridge remains unfinished.
Built in 1976, the bridge connects Zehlendorf at Sundgauer Straße, Dahlemer Weg, and Berliner Straße. It spans the city highway and Westhafen, making it the longest and oldest of its type in Berlin. The northern section, however, remains in disrepair, with no timeline for renovation.
Work on the bridge resumed recently, but the project is still incomplete. The southern side has been refurbished and reopened to pedestrians and cyclists. Yet, the northern section remains closed, with scaffolding and debris littering the structure. This delay is not unique to the 'Snail Bridge'. The Ernststraße Footbridge in Reinickendorf faces similar issues, with repairs repeatedly postponed despite the urgent need for refurbishment.
The 'Snail Bridge' in Zehlendorf is not the only bridge in Berlin facing delays and interruptions. The Ernststraße Footbridge in Reinickendorf also requires extensive renovation, with no concrete timeline set. These delays highlight the need for improved planning and coordination in bridge maintenance across the city.
