SNP rocked by fresh scandals as Labour demands accountability
The SNP has faced fresh criticism over a string of controversies, with Scottish Labour accusing the party of decades-long sleaze and secrecy. Recent scandals include the charging of ex-chief executive Peter Murrell with embezzlement and the resignation of a health secretary over misused public funds.
The claims come as a wider debate erupts over accountability in Scottish politics, with both major parties trading accusations of misconduct. A long-running police investigation into SNP finances led to Peter Murrell, the party’s former chief executive, being charged with embezzlement. The case has added to mounting pressure on the party, which Scottish Labour claims has been plagued by scandal for years.
Meanwhile, former health secretary Michael Matheson stepped down after attempting to claim £11,000 in taxpayer funds for iPad roaming charges while on holiday. The incident further fuelled accusations of financial mismanagement within the SNP.
Scottish Labour deputy leader Dame Jackie Baillie accused the party of a culture of cover-ups, pointing to the deaths of two children at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital—linked to an infected water system—as an example of systemic failure. She argued that secrecy had become a defining trait of the SNP’s time in power.
In response, an SNP spokesman countered by highlighting controversies within Labour’s ranks, including the defence of an MSP’s friendship with a convicted paedophile and the arrest of another MSP on suspicion of serious crimes.
The debate intensified after it emerged that Health Secretary Neil Gray had used official limousines to attend Aberdeen football matches. The revelation followed the conviction of ex-North Lanarkshire Council boss Jordan Linden on 10 charges, including sexual assault and stalking, though he was not directly linked to the SNP.
Scottish Labour compiled a list of what it called 'lowlights' since the 2021 Holyrood election, further escalating tensions between the two parties. The SNP now faces renewed scrutiny over its financial and ethical conduct, with legal proceedings against Murrell ongoing. Scottish Labour’s accusations have widened the political divide, while the SNP has sought to deflect criticism by pointing to Labour’s own controversies.
As investigations and public debates continue, the fallout from these scandals is likely to shape Scotland’s political landscape in the months ahead.
