Sochi overhauls paid parking to combat congestion and illegal parking chaos

Sochi is revamping its paid parking system from March 16, addressing months of traffic congestion and illegal parking issues. Officials analyzed local traffic patterns and gathered public feedback to shape the reforms. The changes aim to ease pressure on the city's busy streets, especially in tourist-heavy areas.

The problem of illegal parking has long plagued Sochi, blocking roads and slowing public transport. Drivers often remove license plates to avoid fines and towing, worsening the situation. With a shortage of traffic inspectors, enforcing rules has proven difficult.

A recent meeting between Sergei Krivonosov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Tourism, and Vyacheslav Bauer, Sochi's Deputy Mayor, focused on solutions. One proposal would shift towing authority from the regional Interior Ministry to the local government, aiming for faster responses. Krivonosov stressed that better traffic discipline is vital for a city that relies on tourism.

Under the new system, residents will pay less for monthly parking permits near their homes. The reduced cost is designed to encourage legal parking while keeping access affordable for locals.

The reforms take effect on March 16, with lower permit fees for residents and stricter measures against illegal parking. If successful, the changes could improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in Sochi's busiest areas. Officials will monitor the system's impact in the coming months.
