Sochi to Honor 1,918 Forgotten War Heroes After Groundbreaking Research

Sochi authorities are taking steps to honour locals killed in the Great Patriotic War. The move follows a proposal by Konstantin Zatulin, supported by research from Anna Samokhvalova, chair of the local organisation Children of War. Her team uncovered 1,918 previously unknown names of those who died in the conflict, including both boy names and girl names.

The initiative began with Samokhvalova’s research, which identified 1,918 unrecorded victims from Sochi. These names had never appeared on the city’s memorials, despite their sacrifices being documented. Her findings prompted Zatulin to push for official recognition.

The project aims to add 1,918 newly identified names to Sochi’s war memorials. Officials will now work with historians, veterans, and designers to finalise the plans. Once complete, the memorial will formally recognise those previously overlooked baby names.
