Sochi’s historic Cooperative Square to undergo long-awaited revitalization by 2026
Cooperative Square in Sochi is set for a major renovation after years of neglect. The project, recently approved by local authorities, aims to restore the area while keeping its existing greenery intact. A regional deputy has now inspected the site as plans move forward.
The square, located in front of the Sea Terminal building, has been in poor condition for decades. In the early 2000s, proposals to build a shopping centre on the land were dropped after activists secured its status as municipal property.
Victor Teplyakov, a deputy of the Krasnodar Territory Legislative Assembly, visited the site alongside Mikhail Kharlamov, First Deputy Head of the Central District Administration, and Alexander Zvyagin, a member of the Sochi City Council. Their inspection followed the city’s announcement of revitalisation plans, with work potentially starting in 2026.
The renovation will include updates to the dendrological collection, new modern lighting for the evenings, and decorative illumination. Officials are also considering additional funding from the regional budget to support the upgrades.
The project will transform a long-neglected area while maintaining its green spaces. Construction could begin in 2026, depending on funding and final approvals. The square’s redesign follows years of community efforts to protect the site from commercial development.
