Socialist Party's Pedro Nuno Santos wins 96.9% backing in leadership vote
The Socialist Party (PS) has strengthened its leadership with a decisive vote of confidence. Secretary-General Pedro Nuno Santos secured 96.9% support in the latest internal election, up from 95.4% the previous year. This result follows a series of strong performances in local and presidential polls, signalling renewed momentum for the party.
Santos emerged as the most legitimate leader of the PS after over 20,000 members participated in the primaries. He now claims a clear mandate to push a socialist alternative to the current government's policies. The party is also testing its own policy platform, particularly in areas like healthcare, while assessing the existing national health pact.
From May onwards, the PS will shift focus to a new strategic priority: the **blue economy**. This initiative will involve marine and coastal economic activities, though specific projects or measures remain undisclosed. All leadership bodies within the party will align around this second strategic plan. The next political step will depend on the president's response. Santos intends to request a meeting at Belém Palace, where he will await further direction from the head of state.
The Socialist Party now moves forward with a reinforced leadership and a new economic focus. The blue economy strategy will shape its agenda in the coming months. Meanwhile, the president's next move will determine how the party's proposals advance on the national stage.
