Solingen honours Hansjörg Schweikhart with Germany's Order of Merit for lifelong service
Hansjörg Schweikhart has received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his decades of public service. The award was presented at Solingen Town Hall by Mayor Daniel Flemm, marking a first for both men at such a ceremony. Schweikhart, a long-standing member of the Solingen CDU, expressed gratitude and dedicated the honour to his community. Schweikhart has been active in local politics since joining the CDU in 1978. Over the years, he has held multiple roles, including district mayor, while also serving as chairman of the Luther Church Building Association for more than 30 years. His work there has brought in over one million euros in donations and organised countless events centred around the church.
Mayor Flemm highlighted Schweikhart’s commitment to dialogue and his ability to connect government with society. During the ceremony, Schweikhart thanked his wife and the many volunteers who supported his efforts. He emphasised his vision for Solingen—a city where families and generations flourish and people care for one another. Colleagues have long described him as a politician who builds bridges. His focus on collaboration and community has left a lasting impact on the city’s political and social landscape.
The Federal Cross of Merit recognises Schweikhart’s lifelong contributions to Solingen. His work in politics, fundraising, and community engagement has shaped the city for decades. The award ceremony also marked a personal milestone for both Schweikhart and Mayor Flemm.
