Solingen Poverty Conference Presents Itself to Kiwanis Solingen

The Solingen Poverty Conference (SAK) has begun a new series of talks to raise awareness about local poverty. Their first presentation took place at Kiwanis Solingen, where experts shared stark figures and real-life cases. The event also marked the launch of a directory listing support services for those in need.

Around 30,000 people in Solingen live below the poverty line. Among them are over 2,200 elderly residents and roughly 820 children under three. Heike Auer, Horst Koss, and Uli Preuss from the SAK presented these numbers alongside personal stories to illustrate the challenges faced by vulnerable groups.

The session ended with a detailed discussion and the unveiling of a 14-page directory. Titled the Solingen Initiatives Directory, it lists trusted organisations offering help to those struggling. Kiwanis President Hartmut Hoferichter received the first printed copy.

Kiwanis Solingen already supports local children through its annual school backpack drive. This year, they also introduced the Gift of Warmth campaign. Meanwhile, the SAK plans to expand its outreach with a new website in spring 2024 and a traveling exhibition.

The directory and upcoming projects aim to connect residents with essential support. The SAK’s efforts come as poverty continues to affect thousands in Solingen, from young families to older adults. Further details on the directory and future events will be shared as they develop.
