The suspension of Solingen's legal affairs chief, Jan Welzel, has sparked a fierce political row. A recent court ruling overturned his three-month suspension, reigniting tensions between the city's Christian Democrats and the Düsseldorf district government. The CDU now accuses the supervisory authority of acting on political motives rather than legal grounds.

The dispute began when Welzel was suspended, leaving Solingen's administration without a key department head for months. This absence placed significant pressure on the city's executive board and newly elected mayor, Daniel Flemm. The CDU claims the suspension was baseless and has severely damaged Welzel's reputation.

CDU faction leader Carsten Voigt has condemned the district government for what he calls a 'severe breach of trust'. He argues that a 'dedicated elected official' was removed without proper evidence. The party is now demanding a full review of the case, including whether Solingen is owed compensation for the disruption caused. The CDU's criticism extends to Düsseldorf's government president, Thomas Schürmann. The city's CDU parliamentary group has openly questioned his competence, insisting on a public explanation. They argue that the supervisory authority failed in its duty to remain impartial, instead acting on political bias. Trust between Solingen's CDU and the district government has been 'profoundly shaken'. The party insists that only full transparency can repair the damage done. As of March 11, 2026, no public response has been issued by the Düsseldorf state government to the CDU's demands.

The CDU's calls for accountability remain unanswered for now. The party is pushing for a formal statement, a case review, and possible compensation. Without a response, the political tension between Solingen and Düsseldorf is likely to persist.
