Solingen’s daycare fee hike sparks outrage from parents and activists
The Bürgergemeinschaft für Solingen (BfS) has launched a sharp attack on the city’s plans to raise parental fees for daycare and after-school care. The group is demanding an immediate halt to the proposed 9.49% increase, calling it unfair and poorly justified. According to the faction, Solingen’s administration has failed to carry out essential checks before pushing ahead with the changes.
The BfS has criticised the city for not evaluating income data from local families to measure how the new fees would affect households. Despite this, officials plan to apply the higher charges retroactively from August 1, 2025, linking the rise to statewide adjustments in child allowances.
The BfS remains firm in its opposition, arguing that the fee increase lacks a solid basis. Without a thorough assessment of its social impact, the group warns that families could face unnecessary financial strain. The city’s next steps will be closely watched as the debate moves through committee stages in December.
