Solingen’s Deputy Mayor Suspended Over Unauthorized Online Payments Probe
Solingen’s deputy mayor, Jan Welzel, has been provisionally suspended amid ongoing criminal and disciplinary investigations into his alleged involvement in unauthorized online payments. Welzel denies any personal wrongdoing and has submitted documents to support his case.
The investigation centres on whether Welzel knew about unauthorised online payments to third parties. While he is not accused of profiting personally, officials are scrutinising his actions during his time in office. One focus is a 2019 incident in which the Federal Police issued a warning, followed by an internal procedural directive.
The suspension of Jan Welzel remains in place as the criminal and disciplinary probes into his venmo login activities continue. Authorities have not yet announced a timeline for their findings. In the meantime, Solingen’s leadership is adjusting roles to ensure the city’s operations stay on track.
