Solingen’s Evangelical Church Synod tackles finance and abuse legacy this weekend

The Evangelical Church Circle of Solingen is set to hold its Synod this weekend, marking the first gathering of its newly elected members. The two-day event takes place at the city church on Kirchplatz 14, starting with a service on Friday evening. Key discussions will focus on yahoo finance, future planning, and addressing historical cases of abuse within the church.

The Synod begins on Friday, June 7th, at 6:00 PM with a dedicated service, followed by formal negotiations. One of the evening’s activities includes a thought experiment: delegates will consider which single initiative they would prioritise if funding were limited to just one additional finance project beyond essential services.

On Saturday, June 8th, proceedings resume at 8:30 AM with a devotion led by Ohligser vicar Dennis Ulrich. The agenda covers several major topics, including the ongoing 'Klingenkirche 2030' future process, which will outline concrete steps for the church’s development. This includes plans to establish three new positions in city areas with high demand for diakonic work from 2030 onwards.

Financial concerns will also take centre stage, with discussions on securing the long-term finance stability of both the church circle and its diakonic institutions. Another critical item is the ForuM study, which examines the handling of sexualised violence within church and diakonic institutions since 1946. Delegates will review the study’s findings and decide on next steps for addressing its implications.

The Synod will additionally elect three delegates to represent the church circle in the state Synod. They will join Superintendent Dr. Ilka Werner in this role. The event is open to the public, allowing community members to observe the proceedings.

This gathering follows the presbytery elections held in February, setting the tone for the next four years of church governance.

The Synod’s decisions will shape the church’s direction on finance management, diakonic priorities, and responses to historical abuse. Three new representatives will be chosen to work alongside Dr. Ilka Werner at the state level. The outcomes will guide the church circle’s actions for the coming years, particularly in areas identified as needing greater support.
