Solothurn to Overhaul Prosecutor Appointment System
The canton of Solothurn is set to revamp its system for selecting public prosecutors and youth prosecutors. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) has initiated these changes, which will see the cantonal congress's role diminished. The people of Solothurn will have the final say on the proposed revisions, as the cantonal constitution will also need to be amended.
Currently, the cantonal congress elects all public and youth prosecutors. Under the proposed changes, these roles will be filled through a professional selection process led by the cantonal executive council. Prosecutors and youth prosecutors appointed under this new system will retain their civil servant status.
The FDP's proposal aims to reduce the number of positions elected by the congress. If approved, only three chief prosecutor roles would remain subject to parliamentary vote. These chief prosecutors would still be elected by the cantonal congress, but following a recommendation from the judicial commission.
The government of Solothurn will initiate these changes following the FDP's request. The cantonal congress will decide whether to declare the proposal urgent, obligating the government to draft the necessary legal amendments. The people of Solothurn will have the final say on the proposed changes, with a revision of the cantonal constitution required.
