South Africa and EU Strike Landmark Deal for Critical Minerals

South Africa and the European Union have signed a partnership to secure critical minerals. The deal, announced on Thursday, November 20, focuses on metals essential for renewable energy, computing, and defence. It comes as Africa hosts the G20 summit, highlighting the continent’s economic growth and mineral resources.

The agreement was finalised between South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Under the pact, South Africa will process minerals locally before export, aiming to climb higher in the global value chain. This shift could boost the country’s industrial capacity and create more jobs.

The new partnership strengthens ties between Africa and the EU in the minerals sector. Local processing of critical metals could reshape the continent’s role in global supply chains. Meanwhile, the G20 summit continues, with Africa pushing for greater international collaboration.
