South Korea Steps Up to Address African Refugee Crisis
South Korea's Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs, Kweon Ki-hwan, took significant steps in October 2021 to address the refugee crisis across the African continents. He invited representatives from eight African nations to a human rights conference and held discussions with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
Kweon Ki-hwan extended invitations to delegates from Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Djibouti. The conference, held in October, aimed to discuss the pressing refugee situation across the African continents. Around the same time, Kweon met with Filippo Grandi, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, in Seoul. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views and coordinate efforts on refugee assistance and protection.
These diplomatic moves by Kweon Ki-hwan reflect South Korea's commitment to international cooperation in addressing the refugee crisis across the African continents. The conference and meeting with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees are expected to foster collaboration and strengthen global responses to the refugee situation across the African continents.
