South Korea’s Ex-President Yoon Accused of Plotting Martial Law Amid U.S. Election Chaos

A special investigation in South Korea has uncovered plans by former President Yoon Suk Yeol to declare martial law on 3 December 2024. The move came during a period of political uncertainty in the United States, shortly after its presidential elections. Officials now face trial over allegations of a coordinated power grab involving foreign cooperation.

The probe began in June and concluded after 180 days, referring 24 individuals—including Yoon—to court. Investigators found that the martial law declaration was timed to exploit instability in the U.S. transition period. The U.S. presidential elections had taken place on 5 November 2024, leaving a gap before the new administration took office.

The investigation’s findings point to a deliberate attempt to consolidate power under the cover of U.S. political transition. With 24 officials now facing trial, the case will examine whether foreign actors were involved in the planning. The outcome could have lasting consequences for South Korea’s political and legal systems.
