South Korea’s Government Services Crashed After Massive Data Center Fire
A major fire at South Korea’s National Information Resource Center (NIRS) in late September caused widespread disruption to government services. The blaze, which broke out on September 26, damaged critical servers and knocked out key online administrative systems across the country for days. The fire started in a server room at the NIRS data center in Daejeon. Investigators later determined that an explosion of lithium-ion batteries was the primary cause. Firefighters brought the fire under control by the following day, but the damage led to prolonged outages. The fire exposed vulnerabilities in the country’s digital infrastructure, leading to immediate leadership changes. With most services now back online, officials continue to assess long-term measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
