SpaceX Starlink Arranges In-Flight Internet Services with Virgin Atlantic
Virgin Atlantic is set to take the skies by storm with its latest announcement - a partnership with SpaceX's Starlink for high-speed, satellite-powered Wi-Fi across its entire fleet. This move is expected to make Virgin Atlantic the first U.K. airline to offer such cutting-edge connectivity.
Last year, Virgin Atlantic completed a $17 billion fleet modernization, which included securing seven additional A330-900neo aircraft. Now, the airline aims to build upon this investment by providing the best connectivity in the skies.
According to Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Chief Experience Officer at Virgin Atlantic, the Starlink service will deliver "free, streaming quality, unlimited, fleet-wide Wi-Fi." This means passengers can stream movies, play games, make video calls, and even shop online, all at 30,000 feet.
The installation of Starlink's satellite Wi-Fi will begin on Boeing 787s, Airbus A350s, and A330neos in Q3 2026. By the end of 2027, the rollout is expected to be completed.
Virgin Atlantic's move follows the footsteps of several other airlines that have already partnered with Starlink. United Airlines, Qatar Airways, Air France, Hawaiian Airlines, and JSX are among the existing Starlink airline partners. In fact, United plans to equip its entire two-cabin regional fleet, more than 300 planes, with Starlink by the end of 2025. Qatar has already introduced Starlink internet on its Boeing 777 fleet.
For private jet operators, Embraer offers Starlink connectivity in the aftermarket for Praetor jets, with Flexjet planning to integrate it into their entire Praetor fleet.
Emirates is reportedly in talks with SpaceX for future in-flight connectivity, suggesting that the trend towards faster, more reliable in-flight Wi-Fi is gaining momentum.
The upgrade is expected to further elevate Virgin Atlantic's onboard experience, making it an even more attractive choice for travellers. Furthermore, the service will be offered free of charge for Flying Club members, adding an extra layer of value to the Virgin Atlantic loyalty programme.
With Starlink's satellite network driving faster in-flight Wi-Fi across the globe, it's an exciting time for air travel. Virgin Atlantic's partnership with SpaceX is yet another step forward in transforming the in-flight experience, making it more connected, comfortable, and enjoyable.
