SPD backs Dr. Sascha Dietrich for Wolfenbüttel’s 2026 mayoral race

Four candidates will contest the 2026 Wolfenbüttel mayoral election, with Dr. Sascha Dietrich now officially nominated by the SPD. The party has backed him as a strong contender, citing his deep local ties and extensive experience in public administration. His campaign focuses on boosting the city’s economic independence and modernising its image.

Dr. Sascha Dietrich was proposed by the Wolfenbüttel SPD in December 2025, with his formal nomination set for early 2026. The party highlights his combination of professional expertise, local roots, and political background as key strengths for the role.

A qualified lawyer, Dietrich brings over two decades of experience in public administration and municipal consulting. Currently, he leads a unit at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, specialising in securing skilled labour. His campaign priorities include reducing the city’s reliance on external funding, improving its reputation, and introducing contemporary city marketing strategies.

Beyond economic goals, Dietrich plans to reform the administration to focus on practical solutions. He also aims to increase citizen participation and develop stronger neighbourhood networks across Wolfenbüttel.

The election will feature four candidates: Dietrich (SPD), Kerstin Glier (CDU), Vincent Schwarz (FDP), and the independent incumbent, Ivica Lukanic. Each brings different approaches to the city’s future leadership.

Dietrich’s nomination adds a new dynamic to the 2026 election, with his background in law and public service shaping his vision for Wolfenbüttel. The election will determine whether his plans for economic self-sufficiency, citizen engagement, and modern governance resonate with voters. The SPD’s official endorsement is expected to solidify his campaign in the coming months.
