SPD backs national service bill—but only if youth groups shape the decision

SPD foreign affairs spokesperson Adis Ahmetovic has expressed his support for a new national service system bill, contingent on the involvement of youth organizations in its decision-making process. Ahmetovic believes this inclusion will foster empathy, understanding, and enthusiasm for the new system, while also strengthening the Bundestag's authority.

Ahmetovic has proposed binding participation from various youth organizations, such as the German Federal Youth Council and the Federal Student Council, in the decision-making process. He expects the voices of the younger generation to be systematically incorporated, emphasizing the importance of fairness, transparency, and voluntariness in the design of the service system.

Ahmetovic suggests that any reactivation of conscription should be done through legislation, not administrative decision. He believes that a well-designed system, with the input of these stakeholders, can build trust in the state and its institutions. Ahmetovic's vote on the bill is tied to the inclusion of these youth organizations, making it a decisive factor in his upcoming decision.
